Vuvi Mask
With clean lines and simple forms this is, in fact, a very rare piece.
It has a flat, semi-oval face, a pointy chin and no hair or ears. Half-way up, the face is crossed by double-arcing, continuous eyebrows which close off the almond-shaped eyes. The design is highlighted by a light relief and a dark colour, which contrasts with the face’s pale background. The nose is short and triangular and sits above a roughly cut mouth, which is fairly small and sits half-open. These masks are worn at the funerals of important people.
The Vuvi
The tribes-people live in an isolated area, in a forest next to the Ngoumé River in Gabon.
